ITL Conversations About Race: Silence is No Longer an Option

How Coaches & Facilitators Can Move From Dancing Around Race to Dancing With It


As coaches and facilitators in the ITL community, we all share a deep desire to support our clients’ development on many levels as they move from thought to action in deciding how they want to address issues that arise for them.  When these issues involve race, whether explicitly or implicitly, it can be challenging to feel confident that we are showing up as our best selves and full partners in the conversation and not allowing our own thoughts and feelings about race to get in the way.

We, a committee of ITL members, have developed a three-part series of virtual programs to help all of us more skillfully and fully engage in conversations about race.  Our goal is to create a safe space for cross-racial learning, connection, and growth.  We hope you will join us

Our first event will offer an opportunity to explore our racial identities and discover ways to mitigate individual and systemic biases. We will review our history as Americans, examining events that many of us were not taught in school, and what we each bring to the table in these discussions.

Our second meeting in the series will focus on facilitating group conversations about race in the workplace.As most of us have seen, such conversations can quickly become awkward as many members decline to share candidly, whether out of frustration of not having felt listened to or fear of blame, shame, or professional repercussions.We will examine how we can encourage and support a genuine exchange of ideas and experiences among a group of colleagues.

In our third and final meeting of the series, we will prepare for powerful one-on-one coaching conversations with a client, examining how to delve deeper into discussions of feelings and thoughts around race in a confidential setting.We will examine how we can best build our own self-awareness to recognize how we are showing up in these conversations and how to skillfully hold the space for whatever comes up with the client.
